Providing sustainable outcomes and social value for the communities we serve in

As an integrated design, construction, and consultancy company, much of the work we do provides critical assets that people rely on in their daily lives – yet doing so requires significant natural resources.

We therefore have a responsibility to keep our environmental impact as minimal as possible across the entire project lifecycle. At the same time, we have a duty to ensure that the buildings we provide are resilient enough to withstand physical as well as social and economic upheavals. Achieving this while having a positive impact on the communities we serve requires a thoughtful approach focused on sustainability.

To support our efforts to transform our business activities and be at the forefront of change, we are focusing our efforts on three main areas: ensuring equity, inclusion and diverity, supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and responding to climate action.

Equity, Inclusion and Diversity

Creating an equal, diverse, and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities in which we operate.

  • Cultivating a rich, diverse, and inclusive culture has always been – and will continue to be – a companywide commitment. We believe that delivering exceptional results can only happen with high-performance teams – and these can only be built by including a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. This focus on finding and nurturing the best talent has been the key to our company’s continued success as an innovator. Our goal is to create a workplace where everyone can prosper, because they have the chance to use their skills to the fullest extent possible.

  • We recognize that to deliver on this goal, we need to focus on creating a gender balance within our workforce. To achieve this, we proactively consider women for promotions and inclusion in our talent development programs, helping them to progress their careers. Our recruitment strategy actively targets women, and we also aim to have more senior roles filled by women. Wherever possible, we implement flexible work practices and have committed to eliminating the gender pay gap for like-for-like roles.

  • We also need to build resilience in our workforce by building the next generation of leaders. To achieve this, we need to expose a broad spectrum of young people to the many exciting career options available, and then provide them with the necessary skills and resources to pursue them. One of the ways we are doing this is by partnering with some of the most prestigious colleges in the regions where we operate to find and develop new young talent.

Response to Climate Action

Influencing lasting change by designing and building low-carbon and net-zero buildings.

  • Tackling climate change requires solutions that are low carbon, circular, smart, and sustainable. As a company that provides services across the entire building lifecycle, we are uniquely placed to advise clients and influence change at an early stage of the process. Our extensive experience with net-zero, low-carbon, and green building means we can offer valuable insight and expertise with regards to designing, constructing, and managing environmentally responsible buildings.

  • We have also delivered many projects that have been awarded internationally recognized sustainability certifications, such as LEED, CEEQUAL, and BREEAM, as well as local certifications like Estidama, and thus can provide advice on achieving these accreditations.

  • We are also strong supporters of digital transformation and data-driven decisions. Digital tools and software have the potential to address some of the challenges the construction industry faces with regards to de-carbonizing. Methods such as BIM enable the analysis of embodied carbon when using different construction methods and materials, planning the construction sequencing for the least environmental impact and energy use, and even simulating building performance prior to construction to optimize energy efficiency, for example. The shift to a data-centric approach means better decisions can be made which lead to improved environmental outcomes and long-term sustainability. Our focus on digital design and virtual construction supports this goal, and is how we are contributing to addressing climate change.

United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals

Supporting the shared global vision for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.

  • The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are an important driver of change – one which we support whole-heartedly. The 17 goals are an urgent call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives of all. As a responsible business, it is our duty to answer this call by adjusting our business activities to support these goals. We have identified 10 of the 17 goals where we can take decisive action to create change for the better.

    • Goal 3 – Good health and wellbeing: We ensure safe work environments both in the office and on site and promote the wellbeing of our employees through a range of initiatives.
    • Goal 5 – Gender equality: We are committed to creating an inclusive work environment, encouraging more women into the industry, implementing flexible working practices, and reducing the gender pay gap.
    • Goal 8 – Decent work and economic growth: We promote employment and fair work in the geographies we operate in. Our commitment to worker welfare was recognized and awarded by the Expo 2020 at their Better Together event. We also engage with and create lasting partnerships with SMEs in areas we operate, driving economic growth in the area.
    • Goal 9 – Industry, innovation, and infrastructure: Innovation is one of our core values and a key component of our business activities. We aim to bring transformation to our industry with new methods, tools, and innovative solutions to critical infrastructure challenges, constantly striving for improvement while sharing our lessons learned with others.
    • Goal 11 – Sustainable cities and communities: We design and build spaces that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. By keeping this aim at the forefront of everything we do, we can positively impact sustainable development for better outcomes for all.
    • Goal 12 – Responsible consumption and production: We have worked hard to develop a resilient and sustainable supply chain by establishing partnerships with responsible suppliers, promoting the use of local materials where possible, applying efficient waste management practices on our construction sites, and increasing our recycling efforts.
    • Goal 13 – Climate action: Our unique position as a multidisciplinary company within the built environment means we are able to advise clients on how to achieve net-zero designs and carbon-free constructions, as well as how to best incorporate renewables during design and construction for minimal environmental impact.
    • Goal 15 – Life on land: Our work within environmentally sensitive sites is always undertaken under the guidance of experienced ecologists. We care about preserving local habitats within our construction sites, acting responsibly to ensure we cause no harm and support wildlife.
    • Goal 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions: Our vision is to become a strong institution within the industry, offering equal opportunity for all. In all our dealings with our clients, suppliers, employees, stakeholders and the public, we act with integrity and adhering to our Code of Conduct and Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy.
    • Goal 17 – Partnerships for the goals: As a global design, construction, and consultancy company, we engage with both professional and academic institutions and local communities to support and participate in sustainability programmes and initiatives.
